Communicating the Invisible: Media Representations and Perceptual Barriers of Drought Risk in Hungary

Abstract

The research examines how drought risk and water scarcity are represented in the Hungarian digital media space, with particular attention to textual patterns, psychological and interpretative barriers, and the role of visual elements. Its long-term goal is to develop a differentiated communication framework that supports cooperation in drought prevention and management, especially within the Danube River Basin. The study is based on qualitative media content analysis supported by artificial intelligence tools. It covers online news articles, social media content, and governmental communication published between September 2024 and September 2025, with particular focus on narrative structures, modes of audience addressing, and the impact of visual elements on text comprehension. Preliminary findings suggest that communication about the water crisis often generates fear, which weakens societal response. Strengthening trust and risk awareness would be essential; however, loss-oriented, technocratic language continues to dominate the narratives, while emotionally resonant storytelling and locally grounded visual elements remain underrepresented. Drought communication is effective when it is scientifically grounded while also being culturally and linguistically accessible. An approach that integrates psychological considerations and tailors visual and textual messages to specific target groups can strengthen societal resilience and adaptive capacity.

Ágnes Kovács , National University of Public Service Faculty of Water Sciences, Department of Water and Environmental Policy

ÁGNES KOVÁCS earned MA degrees in Hungarian Language and Literature (2004) and Applied Linguistics (2006) from the University of Miskolc. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Doctoral School of Public Administration Sciences, Ludovika University of Public Service, where her research focuses on water-related crisis and risk communication. Since 2022, she has been a Research Assistant and Lecturer at the Faculty of Water Sciences, Ludovika University of Public Service, and since 2024, she has also served as a Communication Specialist for the UNESCO Chair in Water Conflict Management.

EdinaKriskó , National University of Public Service Faculty of Political Science and International Studies Department of Social Communication

EDINA KRISKÓ earned her degree in Communication Studies from the University of Szeged (2005), and in 2013 she obtained her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Pécs. She is currently an Associate Professor at the Ludovika University of Public Service. She is a member of the Hungarian Society of Law Enforcement Science and the Hungarian Communication Studies Association, and received the Innovative Department Award in 2021 and a Special Prize of the Trainer of the Year Award in 2022.
