Abstract

200 years ago, on 3 November 1825, Count István Széchenyi offered a year's income from his estates for the establishment of a Hungarian Society of Scientists. The history of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) is counted from this day. In recognition of the two-century-old successes of Hungarian science and Hungarian scientists, the National Assembly supports the worthy celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Therefore, the years 2025 and 2026 were declared the Year of Hungarian Science by Parliamentary Resolution No. 20/2024 XI.6. This article recalls the achievements of the Academy in the field of water sciences during its 200-year history, without claiming to be exhaustive, illustrating the effectiveness of scientific work in water science with the activities of certain academics. The aim of this article is to initiate a better overview of the experiences of the 200 years of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences during the 2025-2026 Year of Hungarian Science, which will be launched in the spirit of the bicentenary, and to formulate proposals on how the Hydrological Society should help the development of water sciences in the coming decades.
