Abstract
Surveys are the lifeblood of higher education research – at least for those of us who like to imagine that statistics can answer life's biggest questions. This paper takes a somewhat tongue-in-cheek look at how we often manage to derail our research process from the very start: designing survey questions. We skip over mundane details like whether our questions are relevant, measurable, or reliable, and scoff at “face validity,” “content validity,” or even pilot studies as unnecessary hurdles. After all, why settle for clarity and accuracy when we can bask in the joy of wildly creative interpretations or the thrill of conjuring groundbreaking (if implausible) new theses? With that spirit in mind, I’ve gathered the most frequent mistakes in survey design-along with a few tips, should anyone be curious about avoiding them.
