Abstract

Electrochemotherapy is a widely used locoregional method for the treatment of superficial tumors with different histologies. During treatment, a chemotherapeutic drug, usually bleomycin, is electroporated into the tumor cells, resulting in an increased cytotoxic effect. Beyond its effectiveness, electrochemoterapy is a repeatable and minimally invasive intervention that induces few side effects. The application of electrochemotherapy is expanding with the treatment of deep seated, visceral and benign tumors, and intensive research is in progress in order to investigate its combination with modern systemic therapies.
