The Impact of Digitalization on Tourism and Hospitality

Keywords: tourism, hospitality, hotel industry digitalization

Abstract

Our research indicates that digitalization simplifies our lives in many areas; we believe that the spread of "smart" concepts will have the most significant impact on the sustainable hotel and hospitality industry.

Our study focused on attitudes regarding hotel operations within the tourism sector. While 55% of respondents fully agreed with checking into a hotel via an app, a smaller proportion—45%—fully supported checking out using a smartphone. Regarding smart technologies, 73% of respondents rated the importance of smart devices in enhancing hotel comfort (e.g., smart TVs, app-controlled room climate control, smart minibars) between 5 and 7 points. Furthermore, a total of 83% either somewhat or fully agreed with the use of applications that help explore leisure activities available at the accommodation and in the surrounding area.

As these digital solutions enhance guest comfort and satisfaction, it is worth for accommodation providers to pursue this direction in their technological developments. According to the research, the three technological solutions that most capture travelers' interest are digital check-in (32%), keyless entry (23%), and pre-adjustable lighting and temperature
