Smoking and tourism: tobacco as a core product of thematic routes

Keywords: tourism, thematic routes

Abstract

In Hungary, thematic routes offer opportunities for both learning and leisure—while adhering to principles of sustainability. Beyond the aspect of nicotine dependence, the marketing of the "Tobacco Route" relies heavily on the narratives and cultural beliefs that are significant for tourism.

These tobacco-themed routes are interactive: visitors can participate in tobacco cultivation and processing, learn about the history and varieties of tobacco, and craft or purchase smoking accessories (such as pipes, boxes, and pouches). The experience also includes tasting local alcoholic specialties and listening to blues and salsa music. Research presented in this study confirms that, while tobacco-related legislation has altered smoking habits, the number of smokers continues to rise year by year. Although WHO data indicate a decline in cigarette consumption and tobacco company profits, this is largely attributable to the black market—a factor that has contributed to tobacco becoming a core product of these thematic routes.
