Developing Sub-regional Cooperation in Zemplén
Abstract
"Euroregio Basiliensis" was established in 1971 through the cooperation of the French department of Upper Alsace, the Swiss city and canton of Basel, and the German district of South Baden. During the political transition, I realized: why not revive the once-successful system of sub-regional foreign economic cooperation—which had been in a "Sleeping Beauty" slumber for seven decades—among the regions situated in the Northeastern Carpathians? With the support of the National Scientific Research Fund (T4589), I began participating in the research and development of cross-border economic cooperation in the Zemplén region in the early 1990s. In this study, I present the process of developing sub-regional cooperation in Zemplén—carried out within the framework of this scientific and expert activity—as well as its organizational structures and emerging opportunities.
