Submissions

1. Basic requirements for manuscripts

• The manuscript submitted for publication may be an original work of writing not yet published elsewhere (e.g. as a journal article, book chapter, research report) and not under consideration by another journal. Conflicts of interest, whether due to funding or otherwise, should be indicated at the beginning of the manuscript, immediately below the abstract.
• The topic of the manuscript must be sociologically relevant and fit the profile of the journal. The purpose, direction, problem statement and analysis of the paper are written in a sociological perspective. The journal gives preference to manuscripts focusing on social processes in Hungary and/or the Central and Eastern European region. It also welcomes innovative theoretical and methodological contributions of a more general nature.
• The structure of the manuscript follows international standards (introduction, literature review, socio-cultural context, data and methodology, results, conclusions).
• The manuscript clearly articulates the research question and its theoretical and social relevance.
• The manuscript presents the relevant and up-to-date literature and establishes the criteria and categories used in the analysis.
• Interpretation of the results is made in the light of the limitations of the method and data.

2. Types of manuscripts

The Hungarian Review of Sociology welcomes manuscripts in the following categories: original scientific paper, review (of a scientific work), report on scientific events.

3. Language of manuscripts

The Hungarian Review of Sociology welcomes manuscripts in English and Hungarian.

4. Ethical guidelines

All persons publishing in the Hungarian Review of Sociology are obliged to comply with the guidelines and code of ethics of the Hungarian Sociological Association regarding plagiarism and other research ethics issues.

When submitting a manuscript, authors must declare whether their research has ethical clearance. If the research has ethical clearance, please indicate the reference number of the clearance in the manuscript. In the case of research on sensitive research topics and/or with vulnerable target groups, authors are particularly encouraged to obtain ethics clearance before starting their research.

5. Open science

• In the name of academic transparency, the editorial team supports manuscripts whose data source and/or other analytical material is accessible to other researchers.
• When submitting a paper, authors should declare whether the research data and related research documentation are available to other researchers (as an online attachment to the manuscript, in an institutional data repository, or on a dedicated website, e.g. OSF, GitHub). If the research data and related research documentation are available to others, please indicate in the manuscript how they can be accessed.
• In the case of manuscripts containing statistical analysis and/or other computational procedures, the editorial team will support manuscripts that make the code for statistical analysis and/or program code available in accordance with open science principles. For quantitative analyses, authors are encouraged to include robustness/and or sensitivity tests.
• In the case of experiments, the editorial team particularly encourages manuscripts whose research design, hypotheses, and analytical procedures have been pre-registered by the authors on a dedicated independent online platform (e.g. OSF, AEA RCT Registry) prior to data collection.

Researchers using qualitative data, such as interviews or participant observation data, are also asked to consider whether qualitative data, as well as related materials such as interview protocols or coding schemes, can be shared.

6. Submission of manuscripts

• Please submit your manuscript by clicking on the “Make a Submission” button on the OJS page of the journal, after registration: https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/szocszemle.
• We cannot accept manuscripts by email.
• For technical problems and questions, the editorial team can be contacted at szociologiai.szemle@szociologia.hu.
• For uploading, an ORCID is required for each author. ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is an identifier used to uniquely identify authors of scientific publications. It takes just a few minutes to create an ORCID, which can be registered via this website.

7. Reviewing

The editorial team decides whether to accept or reject the submitted manuscripts for review on the basis of the criteria listed in point 1.  If the editorial team decides to submit the manuscript for peer review, the review process will be carried out in a double-blind peer review system. A manuscript will be evaluated by at least two reviewers. Taking into account the reviews, the editorial team decides whether to accept, send back for revision or reject the manuscript.

8. Documents to be attached when submitting a manuscript

The editorial office expects manuscripts in Microsoft Word or in a format that can be opened and edited by Microsoft Word. A template for preparing the documents can be downloaded here.

The original, non-anonymised version of the manuscript should include on the first page:

• Authors' first and last names, and in a footnote, the authors' institutional affiliation, email address and ORCID
• Title of the manuscript in English (and in Hungarian if authors speak Hungarian)
• Abstract of the manuscript in English (and in Hungarian if authors speak Hungarian) (maximum 200-200 words)
• 3-5 keywords in English (and in Hungarian if authors speak Hungarian)
• Acknowledgements or funding should be included in the first footnote at the end of the title.

Anonymised version of the manuscript:

• The content should be the same as the non-anonymised document, but should not include the names of authors, affiliations, identifiable projects or funding sources used for the research.
• Authors should refer to their own previous work in the manuscript in the third person singular, similar to the way they refer to the work of other authors.
• Personal data should be removed from the document properties (for Microsoft Word documents, see the technical guide here).

If graphs or tables are embedded in the manuscript in a non-editable format, they should also be included in a separate file in an editable format, if the authoring software allows this.

Authors can send a cover letter to the editorial team with their manuscript, summarising the main points of the manuscript and its contribution. A cover letter is not a mandatory element of manuscript submission.

9. Length

As an original scientific paper, the editorial team expects manuscripts with a main text of approximately 40,000 characters (with spaces). Where justified, studies based on qualitative studies may exceed this length.

For reviews, we expect papers between 12,000 and 20,000 characters (with spaces).

10. Citation style and bibliography

The Hungarian Review of Sociology follows the APA 7 citation style.

When using Zotero, the style should be set to "American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition". The language should be set to Hungarian for Hungarian articles and to English for English articles.

In-text citations should appear in parentheses after the cited text, in the following format:

• Authors' names and year of publication separated by commas
  • For one author: (Kovács, 2025)
  • For two authors: (Kovács & Tóth, 2025)
  • For three or more authors: (Kovács et al., 2025)
• If the authors' names are part of the text, the year of publication of the work cited should be in parentheses after the name. E.g. "Based on the results of Kovács et al. (2025)..."
• If several works are cited within one parentheses, the references should be separated by semicolons. E.g. (Kovács, 2025; Tóth, 2004)
• In the case of a literal citation, the page number cited should also be indicated, e.g. (Kovács, 2025:35)
• In the case of references to works published by the same author in the same year, the works should be distinguished by the use of initials after the year, which should also be indicated in the bibliography. E.g. (Kovács, 2025a; Kovács, 2025b)

The bibliography should appear on a separate page after the body of the text, under the heading Literature.

The bibliography should include all the literature cited in the text, in strict alphabetical order by author name, in such a way that references in the text can be identified in the bibliography.

Please give only the first initial of the first names of authors and editors, as in the examples below.

Studies published in the journal are assigned a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). For this reason, it is necessary that the bibliography includes the DOI of all cited works, if available, in the following format: https://doi.org/10.0000/12345

11. Tables, figures, formulas

Guidelines for tables and figures:

• Tables and figures in the text should be numbered and titled and inserted in the text (e.g. Table 1, Figure 1).
• The titles of tables, columns and rows, and explanations should be in the language of the article.
• Figures should be inserted in the text in an editable form rather than as images.
• Tables and figures should be readable on their own, even when taken out of the text. Titles, labels, and explanations should be brief, but should give all the necessary information (e.g. units of measurement). In the case of figures, the necessary axis labels and units of measurement should be included.
• Please indicate the source in all cases below the table/figure, even in the case of your own figures/tables (e.g. "Own editing based on the 2001 Census data").
• Please standardise the number of decimal places and units.
• In printed figures, only black and white figures can be provided, so please make sure that the figures are in greyscale or that the colours are contrasting enough to be interpretable in greyscale.
• Figures should be presented at a resolution of at least 300 DPI to ensure adequate quality.

12. Quotations

Quotations from literature or interviews should be marked with quotation marks and italics. Quotations of 40 words or less should be included in the text; quotations longer than 40 words should be indented on both sides of the text on a new line.

13. Structure

The text should be divided into headings and, where appropriate, subheadings and sub-subheadings (without numbering). Authors should avoid bulleted lists where possible.

14. Online supplementary materials

The Hungarian Review of Sociology offers the possibility to publish supplementary materials online. The editorial team recommends the use of online appendices, for example, if the appendices are necessary for understanding the manuscript but are of considerable length, or if the authors wish to attach media files to the manuscript for better understanding. It is also possible to include research data and research documentation as online appendices. Authors may also request the possibility of an online appendix in other justified cases. The online appendices will appear in the edited issue as a link to the online appendix page in digital form and clickable.

15. Use of AI

If generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools for content presentation are used, authors must declare their use in the study, and specify which model (developer, tool name, date, version number) and for what purpose the authors used it. An exception is made if the authors use AI solely to improve the readability and language of the text, but in this case, the authors are still responsible for the content of the paper. The prompts used for data preparation, data analysis, graphing should be documented according to the FAIR guidelines for research data management (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), placed in a public repository, and the repository access should be indicated in the study. The authors are responsible for the accuracy, authenticity and originality of the content of the study. Artificial intelligence tools should not be credited as authors of the paper.

16. Publication

After the peer review process, the editorial team decides on the acceptance of the manuscript, followed by linguistic and technical editing. The final, edited manuscript is the first to be published online, already with a DOI number and ready for citation. The print version will be published after the full issue has been compiled. One complimentary copy of the printed issue will be mailed to the authors.

18. Access, open access

All manuscripts published in the journal have gold open access status and can be used under the Creative Commons BY-NC licence, so they can be freely read, shared and adapted. A brief summary of the licence can be found here.
