"He Took Bread"
A Study of Eucharistic Bread Usage in the Eastern and Western Churches
Abstract
The study examines the use of Eucharistic bread in the Christian churches, with particular attention to the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church and the Byzantine rite. Inspired by the call of Saint John Paul II in his apostolic letter Orientale Lumen to become more familiar with the heritage of the Eastern Churches, the paper investigates the historical development of liturgical practices related to the use of Eucharistic bread. Through a comparative analysis of liturgical and theological sources, the study reveals the diversity of Eucharistic practices that have developed within the Christian tradition, as well as the historical and theological reasons for the use of leavened and unleavened bread. The analysis also shows how leaven came to play a key role in ecumenical dialogue, demonstrating that differences can not only divide Christians but, in certain cases, also bring them together.
