Supervision as a Rite of Passage

Loss, Formation and Transformation in the Light of Christian and Cultural Narratives

Abstract

The aim of this study is to present an interpretation of supervision as an initiatory process and as a form of ritual accompaniment, particularly in the context of taking responsibility for letting go and for change. Loss is not merely absence; it can also signify a different quality of professional maturity and the possibility of a new beginning. Within the supervisory process, patterns characteristic of initiation rites can be identified. In this interpretive framework, the supervisor appears as an initiatory companion, though not as a master in the classical sense of ancient ritual traditions. In this narrative, the Christian understanding of the human person plays an important role, alongside various cultural-anthropological models of initiation, which enter into a natural dialogue with the human-serving approach of supervision.
