The Body-Soul Relationship in the Thought of Béla Weissmahr SJ
An Attempt at a Phenomenological Reconstruction
Abstract
This study attempts to demonstrate how Béla Weissmahr thought about the traditional relationship between body and soul in a novel way. After a brief introductory section clarifying key concepts, I first present the mistaken understandings of the body–soul relationship, and then, in the second section, I present the correct understanding based on the experience of self-consciousness. Only after this do I deviate from Weissmahr’s original line of thought, insofar as I seek to arrive at his main conclusion through a phenomenological description of self-consciousness and the body.
