Some Dilemmas of Biblical Interpretation
Abstract
This study is about the ambiguities of exegesis. Interpretation means communication between the material reality of any text (signification) and the consciousness generated in the recipient by that (meaning). However, the signification (material reality) of the text is not clear: it is difficult to determine the author’s intentions accurately, and the signification of the text is usually more than the author’s conscious message. The meaning of the text is also diverse, the question is whether a text can have a normative meaning that applies universally. The main difficulty of interpretation, at the same time, is to establish the compatibility of the text with contemporary culture and explore possible areas of application.
No matter how deep reservations are expressed about historical-critical methods, theological and communal interpretations of the Bible cannot do without it. However, it should be applied differently in scientific enquiry and in preaching or catechesis. We argue that Scripture has a clear and unified vision of the most important doctrinal issues. Yet, on matters of Christian practice the Bible cannot be interpreted in a uniform manner, and therefore is generally not suitable for deciding these questions. We must formulate our own solution based on the spirit and wisdom offered by the Scriptures.
