Abstract

General statements about Rudolf Otto’s oeuvre must be made with caution, especially considering its fragmentary nature. Nevertheless, his theoretical and practical work reveals that his primary goal was to rediscover personal religious experience, while also emphasizing the need to adapt religion to modernity and to assert the primacy of Christianity. His work extends far beyond *The Idea of the Holy*, as it is characterized by a fundamental effort to liberate knowledge from the constraints of intellect and the realm of theoretical concepts. His efforts were driven by the search for religious sentiment, for the *a priori* and the *sui generis* of religious experience itself, in which his own encounters with the numinous played a crucial role. And while these may never be fully captured in words, Rudolf Otto demonstrated that remaining silent about them is equally impossible.
