Why is the First Hungarian Chief Nurse not Widely Remembered?

Abstract

It is a very interesting question why the First Hungarian Chief Nurse, Zsuzsanna Kossuth is not widely remembered while her contemporary, ‘The Lady with the Lamp’, Florence Nightingale is a household name and an icon of European historiography. This study presents an analysis and comparison of the life paths and cultural memories of these two important figures. The significant disparity between their memories could be superficially attributed to differences between their characters or the efficiency of their nursing activities. My purpose in this study is to challenge such assumptions, to raise awareness of Zsuzsanna Kossuth’s memory next to that of her British contemporary, and thus to improve her national and historical reputation.
