Abstract

My study examines the press in the last decade of the 19th century, which was formed in the entire territory of Transylvania in a broader sense, i.e. in historical Transylvania, Partium and Banat, and which was constantly changing. The aim of the study is to highlight the quantitative weight of the region’s written press, to reveal its most important characteristics, and to outline its role and significance in contemporary society. After a brief description of the antecedents and stages of development, I will discuss the general situation of the Hungarian press in Transylvania at the time, outlining its weight in the context of the all-Hungarian and provincial press, illustrating its quantitative growth, qualitative progress, and its division by type and nature. The analysis of the territorial and regional distribution of the written press of the time, the introduction and evaluation of the performance of the major press centres, and the analysis of the endurance of the newspapers provide important data. During my research, I concluded that in the last decade of the 19th century, in the examined area, the prevalence and importance of the press increased continuously.
