The Arctic as a new breakout point for Hungarian security policy?

Keywords: North Pole, Hungary, interests, Arctic Council

Abstract

The study seeks to answer the question whether Hungary’s interest in the Arctic has or canhave a ground. The paper is based on the existing strategic documents that already containvague references to the articulation of Arctic interests, and on exploring the Hungarianpresence in the region, highlighting the main actors and areas of bilateral cooperation. All thiscould be a good basis for moving forward in the next decade(s), for which the acquisition ofHungarian observer status in regional organizations – and above all in the Arctic Council –could be a suitable instrument.
