The international development policy of Hungary from the Millenium until today

Keywords: international development policy, Hungary, foreign- and security policy interests

Abstract

In the 1990s, Hungary carried out mainly ad hoc international aid activities, but since 2001 Hungary has been pursuing an increasingly active international development policy which is well signalled by the steady increase in the country’s official development contribution. The paper addresses the correlation of the causes and dynamics behind the growth and wishes to chart the extent to which Hungary's development activities are in line with its security and foreign policy interests. Comparing the annual reports and strategies on Hungary's international development activities and the country’s foreign and security policy strategies, it can be concluded that the priority in geographical sense is given to the immediate neighbouring countries in all documents, such as Serbia and Ukraine, and in the recent years due to the migration crisis to the Middle East and North Africa.
