Abstract
French Guiana is the only French overseas department, which is located in the South American sub-continent and is the only South American area, which is not a sovereign state. As a department since 1946 French Guiana (Guyane hereinafter) is the largest and poorest of the French departments, but it’s still worthy of further investigation, as demonstrated by the history and the present as well.
