Abstract

Virtues in the first approximation are possible traits of the human personality/character, by which people are disposed to behave ideally from the point of view of ethics, to achieve an ethically important aim, and which has to be acquired by the community. Courage, honor, and loyalty are the basic military virtues in waging wars in the present, and were in the past as well. This paper is a part of a series of papers in which I am proposing a) to present the relationships of basic military virtues; b) to present the many types of basic military virtues; and finally c) to show basic military virtues in the Hungarian military science literature in the long 19th century. This first part of the series deals with virtues generally, and lists and types of the military virtues. The second, third and fourth parts of the series propose courage, honor and loyalty, respectively. Finally, the last part concerns the Hungarian military science literature of the long 19th century in connection with the basic military virtues.
