Abstract

The author describes the geographical location, terrain and short history of Afghanistan from the viewpoint of great powers around her, especially in the XIX.-XX. centuries. He summaries the course and battles of the three British-Afghan Wars, the changing in weapons and tactics from the age of muzzle-loader muskets to the machine-guns, armoured vehicles, lorries and airplanes. In the case of Soviet invasion and war (1979-89), he gives a picture about the previous political events in Afghanistan, the short history of the war, the changing in the organisation, weapons and tactics of Soviet Army, fighting in Afghanistan, from the invasion to the withdrawal.
