Abstract

In the present study, we give an overview of the history of military health care in the city of Esztergom from the early 19th century until the end of the World War I. In the above period, soldiers were always stationed in the city, so medical treatment of the military personnel had to be provided. From the beginning of the 19th century to the War of Independence in 1848-49, a military hospital operated in the town on the river Danube. During the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the k.u.k. (Imperial-Royal) 26th Joint Infantry Regiment became the military unit of the settlement, where a regimental hospital was established at the
end of the 19th century. During the four years of World War I, reserve hospitals were set up for the wounded coming back from the front and for the prisoners of war.
