Is it Possible to Translate Clausewitz Perfectly?
A Linguistic Approach
Abstract
The works of Carl Philipp Gottlieb von Clausewitz, one of the most influential military thinkers, were originally written in German and have been translated into numerous languages. However, international and Hungarian literature increasingly highlights attention to the fact that translating his texts is notoriously difficult. Linguistic factors are frequently cited among the factors that make translation difficult, but no complex study or analysis of the subject has yet been conducted. The linguistic difficulties involved in translating Clausewitz's texts can not only be brought to light through appropriate textual analysis but can also be systematically organized. The results of this research can expand the currently fragmentary basic research on Clausewitz in Hungary. This study summarizes the linguistic challenges of translating Clausewitz’s works.
