The Austro-Hungarian Military Leadership and Avalanche Disasters on the Italian Theatre of the Great War
Abstract
Avalanches, the protection against and the accidents caused by them on the Italian theatre of war of World War One, were serious challenges both for the combat troops and their superior commands. This study summarizes the theoretical and practical steps taken by the
Austro-Hungarian military authorities in order to provide protection against avalanches, and the measures taken to prevent disasters. A list of the most serious avalanche accidents that took place between 1915 and 1918 and the losses suffered as a result is included. The rescue operations and the triggering of artificial avalanches by artillery fire or explosions are also described.
