Dominance and Cooperation
Investigating the Role of Military Potential in EU Defence Cooperation Projects
Abstract
Europe has been facing many challenges since the second half of the 2010s, which has directed the attention on the developments promoting the enhancement of security not only in individual countries, but also at community level. Accordingly, in this paper we examine some of the main characteristics of the cooperative network based on a rather specific form of defence cooperation, PESCO, and explore the possible role of military potential in the field of cooperation in various dimensions. Our research is based on a quantitative approach: we use statistical comparisons and network analysis methods to empirically investigate the research topic. The findings imply that different forms of military capability are significantly related to the patterns of defence cooperation in several respects.
