A Communicative Idea of Peace
The Intuitions of Saint Hildegard of Bingen
Abstract
This article explores the German Benedictine abbess, Saint Hildegard of Bingen’s (1098-1179) inspirative account of peace which she outlines in several of her writings often expressed by way of “visions”. Her idea of peace as prayerful and constructive conflict resolution, attentive openness to spiritual development and faithful search for truth is relevant also for our contemporary situation of cultural and ethnic diversity. Moreover, what one could term Hilde- gard’s communicative model of peace includes both the horizontal dimension of interpersonal relationships and the vertical dimension of cooperation with God’s gift as the ultimate source of peace.
