Existence, Technology and God in Jaspers

Abstract

While researching the critique of the modern image of man, I became aware of Jaspers: instead of an individualistic approach, he views existence as an inherently open entity, and in its openness, he emphasizes its freedom, but he also connects it in an unusual way to the concept of God: in the awareness of its freedom, existence, according to him, gains certainty about God, since it cannot doubt that it is not free by itself. Insofar as we find our own basis in it, it can rhyme with the existence in its both communal and historical openness. However, according to Jaspers, the increasingly pervasive logic of technology ultimately degrades existence into a self-contained function, cutting it off from both its communal and historical openness.
