Abstract

The teaching of intercultural and patient-centered communication is a crucial component of language-for-specific-purposes (LSP) education, particularly in the healthcare domain, where professionals interact with individuals from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Nevertheless, questions arise regarding how the intercultural and patient-centered skills and attitudes developed in LSP instruction relate to the multifaceted knowledge conveyed through university-level courses in the social sciences and psychology. Drawing on the relevant literature, this study explores the interdisciplinary opportunities for integrating intercultural and patient-centered communication into healthcare language education. The literature review aims to demonstrate the relevance and justification of adopting an interdisciplinary approach in this context. Furthermore, the intercultural and patient-centered perspective forms an integral part of the field of Medical Humanities, with particular emphasis on Narrative Medicine. The paper examines their significance, pedagogical applications, and potential contributions to healthcare language education.
