https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/literatura/article/view/21800

In this paper, I argue that anyone committed to the normative ideal of the autonomy of art should adopt a moderate moralist position in the artistic-ethical interaction debate. I begin by briefly presenting two prominent interactionist arguments: Noël Carroll’s moderate moralist “uptake argument” and Berys Gaut’s radical moralist “merited response argument”. These arguments have largely failed to persuade participants in the debate. According to Louise Hanson (2013, 209), this is because “all parties to the debate have tacitly accepted a set of constraints which prejudices the issue against the interactionist”—namely, the Indirectedness Condition and the Qua Constraint. Hanson argues that the interactionist must reject the former. However, while I agree with Hanson’s diagnosis, I contend that the direct strategy she proposes is not a viable path for an interactionist advocate of artistic autonomy. Rather, I argue that the moderate moralist who is sensitive to the (relative) autonomy of art should instead reject the Qua Constraint.
Bárány Tibor

This study explores how ethical narratives take shape through two significant works of modern Hungarian literature, both rooted in profound and haunting historical contexts. The selected texts—Esterházy’s Spionnovella and Spiró’s Sajnálatos események (Unfortunate Events) — converge around a key thematic axis: they both spotlight judicial procedures, such as trials, interrogations, and investigations, as mechanisms that record and codify ethical choices. Through these narrative frameworks, the works interrogate the power dynamics between authority and the individual, while probing the nature of ethical responsibility. Legal practice, depicted as a state-sanctioned model of societal ethical norms, becomes the central gravitational force within both texts. Yet, the narrative techniques employed also expose the fragility of this authority, unsettling its claims to legitimacy. It is this tension—between the power to judge and the ambiguity of justice—that prompts the reader to confront their own ethical stance in relation to the depicted world.
Szabó Gábor

In my study I will show through illustrative excerpts from two contemporary Italian novels, Michela Murgia’s Accabadora (2009) and Donatella Di Pietrantonio’s L’Arminuta (2017), how the “maternal” activity of caring for others appears as the cornerstone of the protagonists’ female identity, and how this caring activity can be understood as a source of female strength. My interpretative framework is based on the genre tradition of Italian mother-daughter novels, on the one hand, and on the ideas of Adriana Cavarero and Luisa Muraro on inclination and the symbolic mother, on the other. I also refer to some basic texts on the subject of mothering and the ethics of care, such as the relevant works by Adrienne Rich, Sara Ruddick
and Carol Gilligan.
Kéry Anna Lilla

The phenomenon and function of translation in the 19th and 20th centuries was not only a matter for the sciences, Hungarian literary history, and canonical literature, but also appeared in surprisingly rich and varied discourses in the columns of daily newspapers and periodicals. The paper explores texts of different genres, forms, registers, depths, and lengths (news, essays, columns, reviews, short stories, anecdotes, humour, advertisements, etc.) in the context of the first half of the 20th century, using two approaches. On the one hand, it tries to show how translation, going beyond its own strictly literary and linguistic poetics, became a means of representing cultural, social, and political situations and processes. On the other hand, it also traces the image that may have existed or developed about translators, as well as the channels, genres, themes, situations, and discourses through which the „news” about translators reached the public and what imaginary and reflective spaces it evoked.
Józan Ildikó

The study interprets János Térey’s work A Legkisebb Jégkorszak (The Smallest Ice Age, 2015) by examining the treatment of space and time in relation to the poetic techniques used to depict societal conditions. The formally experimental and ambitious verse novel was one of the initiators of an epic trend in Hungarian literature that aims to depict the contemporary social environment, focusing on current social and political issues. The Smallest Ice Age examines Hungarian society, primarily the lives of the residents of Svábhegy, in a crisis and borderline situation, during and after a natural disaster. The paper argues that the fundamental tools used by Térey’s novel to represent society (focusing on the mental and social well-being of individuals, families, cities, and the country) are the unique poetic devices of space and time, as well as a set of formal techniques: narrative games and metalepsis (that inventively rethink genre conventions), the occasional use of genre patterns, and metrical and poetic diversity. Through the dialectic of chaos and harmony, the formal characteristics of the novel depict the state of society and the changes taking place.
Melhardt Gergő

The study undertakes a review of the development of the literary-historical portrait of Szilárd Borbély to date, its main assertions, and seeks to place his literary-historical methodology within the context of contemporary biographical trends that are sceptical of the creation of grand narratives. The study focuses on the author’s posthumous volume “Nyugszol a’ nyárfáknak lengő hívesében” – Tanulmányok Csokonairól [“You Rest in the Coolness of the Swaying Poplar Trees.” – Studies on Csokonai], which, despite its incompleteness, contains his main insights on biographical writing.
Rétfalvi P.
