Nuclear weapons are often viewed as essential deterrents against potential adversaries, and for decades, experts have debated their role in conflict prevention, strategic stability, and arms control. In today’s rapidly changing security environment, examining the approaches of nuclear-armed states has become increasingly important, especially as the ongoing Russo–Ukrainian war continues to destabilise regional and global security, with nuclear rhetoric escalating to alarming levels. This study examines the current state of bilateral nuclear arms control between the United States and the Russian Federation to assess its future trajectories. This topic remains highly relevant, as nuclear weapons continue to pose serious risks to international security, and the relationship between these two powers plays a central role in global stability. Moreover, long-standing arms control agreements are under increasing pressure from shifting geopolitical dynamics, technological developments, and changes in military doctrine.

Laura Szilágyi Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20707 Fri, 10 Oct 2025 21:53:02 +0000 The Relationship between Bosnian Identity and Islam. https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20725
Although the analysis of the ethnic composition of society was not a defining characteristic in Bosnia and Herzegovina before the 1990s, after the Yugoslav wars and following 9/11, the
western world started to extend its general stigmatizing narrative to European Muslims too. In order to define a Bosnian identity with European roots, the times before the Turkish conquest of the province in 1460 must be scrutinised. The aim of this study is to explore the roots of Bosnian Muslim (Bosniak) identity, to analyse its relationship with Islam, and to review the common European past as an identity-forming element.

Dóra Fülöp Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20725 Tue, 14 Oct 2025 21:37:19 +0000 The Role of Effect-Based Military Operations in Modern Warfare https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20719
Due to the complexity of modern warfare, the effectiveness of military operations depends not only on the extent of conventional military operational capabilities, but also on the holistic effects induced to achieve strategic goals. The concept of Effects-Based Operations, implemented as an integrated approach, attempts to influence the system processes describing the operational environment by using military, political, economic, social and information domains together. The aim of EBO is to prevent warfare from being based solely on kinetic means and have complex operations carried out based on a system-level analysis, resulting in the achievement of the desired strategic goals through triggering effects. The study presents the theoretical foundations of EBO, the possibilities of its practical application, as well as its challenges and limitations in modern military operations, especially regarding the Russo-Ukrainian war. It pays special attention to the role of technological development, artificial intelligence, and cyber warfare in the application of EBO.
Sándor Szabó Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20719 Tue, 14 Oct 2025 17:46:07 +0000 Hussar moments in World War I https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20720
In recent decades, the First World War has been considered the twilight of the cavalry, and therefore the hussars. This is contradicted by the military operations of the intelligence picket commanded by Lieutenant László Hanvay. The success of the 3rd Squadron of the Imperial and Royal 9th Hussar Regiment was a good example and proved that the hussars as a military branch were capable of remarkable results if used for their original function, taking into account the requirements of the time. The hussars, deployed as a minor task force and with their “old” use, were able to force even a dug-in, numerically superior enemy infantry to retreat and abandon their plans.
Károly Kranzieritz Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20720 Tue, 14 Oct 2025 19:07:14 +0000 Disruptive Technologies in Military Unmanned Aircraft Systems https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20723
The global and regional security situation is apparently fragile and has recently highlighted the importance of the design and operation of military reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and unmanned combat aerial vehicles. Their payloads represent more and more disruptive technologies, which break with the past and provide new technical solutions and procedures. This paper demonstrates the abundance of military advantages provided by additive 3D printing, digital cameras, software-defined radios, global navigation satellite systems, Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. A new technological arms race might be developed between military unmanned aerial vehicles and the counter measures aimed at them in the near future.
Tibor Szilvágyi Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20723 Tue, 14 Oct 2025 20:49:52 +0000 On the Methodological Foundations of Clausewitz Research https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20726
The corpus of Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831) represents a seminal point of departure for modern, universal military theory. Mastery of the Prussian military theorist’s works is often regarded as a benchmark for the scholarly maturity of national-level military science. In contemporary Hungarian military scholasticism, Clausewitz’s magnum opus, Vom Kriege (On War), is frequently referenced. However, the progression of Hungary’s strategic and theoretical military thought remains notably limited. This stagnation stems not only from the fragmentary nature of foundational research but, more critically, from persistent methodological deficiencies within Clausewitz-related studies. These shortcomings have resulted in recurrent misinterpretations of Clausewitz’s thoughts, thereby impeding the coherent evolution of Hungarian military theory.
Miklós Mihály Nagy Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20726 Tue, 14 Oct 2025 22:46:10 +0000 A Magyar Hadtudományi Társaság beszámoló és tisztújító küldöttgyűlése https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20727 Gábor Hausner Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20727 Tue, 14 Oct 2025 22:53:55 +0000 NATO: From Cold War to Ukraine, a History of the World’s Most Powerful Alliance https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20728 Klára Siposné Kecskeméthy Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20728 Tue, 14 Oct 2025 23:02:26 +0000 Racak – A Story of a War Crime https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20729 Szidónia Lángné Petruska Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20729 Tue, 14 Oct 2025 23:06:54 +0000 A Hadtudomány folyóirat publikációs szabályzata https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20730 MHTT Copyright (c) 2025 Hungarian Military Science https://ojs.mtak.hu/index.php/hadtudomany/article/view/20730 Tue, 14 Oct 2025 23:12:23 +0000
