Vol. 1 (2025): What Future for the Concept of Borderless Europe?

Following the 2024 pilot issue, Volume 1, Issue 1 of the ABCD Journal presents a selection of papers from the international conference “What future for the concept of Borderless Europe?” held in May 2025 at Ludovika University of Public Service in Budapest. Organised by the LUPS-CESCI Research Group on Cross-Border Cooperation and the Transfrontier Euro-Institute Network (TEIN), the conference – and subsequently the present issue – examined how recent migration, security, health and war-related crises are reshaping European border regimes and challenging the ideal of a borderless continent. Published jointly by CESCI and the University of Eastern Finland, this issue positions the journal as a platform between research and policymaking in Border Studies: its contributions address questions of identity and border symbolism, innovative legal and governance tools, Schengen and security, as well as the role of education, language and citizenship in sustaining cross-border cooperation, offering both critical reflection and concrete insights for scholars, practitioners and decision-makers.
